What is fossil fuel divestment?
|
Divestment is the removal of money or financial resources from wherever they were invested, and it is often followed by investment in something else. Divestment from fossil fuels removes funding for a corrupt and dying industry, which signals not only that fossil fuels are a risky financial investment, but also that it is immoral to support an industry that is actively fueling the climate crisis and the destruction of nature.
Every year, the fossil fuel industry receives 5.2 trillion dollars ($5,200,000,000,000) worth of investments in the form of direct and indirect subsidies, which is 36 times what the renewable energy industry receives, according to the International Monetary Fund. Divestment from fossil fuels and the subsequent reinvestment in clean, renewable energy technologies would be a total game changer and would likely lead to rapid and expansive changes to the energy landscape. |
