What is a climate emergency declaration?
Climate Emergency Declarations are resolutions that local, state, and national governments can pass, and they publicly acknowledge that we are in a climate crisis that demands urgent action. They are an important step that elected officials can take to signal to their constituents and other leaders that climate change is an existential threat, and that they commit to prioritizing climate action. Once a governing body or organization declares a climate emergency, elected officials are encouraged to pass additional legislation that reflects their commitment. Constituents and activists can also use the resolution as way to hold governments accountable to taking action.
Orlando has declared a climate emergency
Fridays For Future Orlando teamed up with a coalition of organizations lead by the CLEO Institute in the campaign to get Orlando to declare a climate emergency. After months of organizing, Orlando City Council declared a climate emergency on November 9, 2020. Other locations in Florida that have declared a climate emergency include Miami Beach, Miami, Gainesville, Surfside, and Coral Gables.
